#Nome, a city born out of a Gold Rush.

When Vitus Bering, Danish explorer in the service of the Czar, ventured to #Alaska in the 18th century, the strait region which now bears his name and that Zara is hopefully going to cross soon, had been inhabited for at least three thousand years previously by the #Inuit. Their villages were established along the coast and near rivers.

Nome, on the other hand, owes its existence to the discovery of gold by three Swedish gold diggers in 1898. The news soon reached the Klondike region (Canada), already plagued by #goldfever. By the following year 5,000 people searched the beaches of Nome. Soon, the local population would approach 30,000. Nowadays, gold diggers still come to try their luck ...
