FlyZolo Team Update - Day 23
In #Monterrey, #Mexico, Zara was met by the ASPA (Asociación Sindical De Pilotos Aviadores De México) and it’s Gender and Equality Secretary, Captain Martha Yolanda Vera Araujo, who knows everything about not only aviation, but also the challenges of trying to become a female commercial pilot in the last decennia.
As a young girl, she dreamed incessantly of becoming a captain just like her dad and kept drawing herself at the controls in a #cockpit. She had to endure jokes and ridicule about it, but her dad supported and encouraged her. Notwithstanding an additional fair share of challenges and obstacles to realise her dream, linked to her gender, Captain Martha Vera, succeeded in just that: becoming a commercial pilot and being promoted to captain of a B737, and now a B787.
Having been where she'd been, she therefore also wanted to promote her passion and profession to girls and women who wanted to pursue their dreams in aviation. Together with colleagues she paved the way by creating the Commission for Equity and Equality of the ASPA, striving to improve the conditions and accommodations women are facing during different biological stages of their lives and profession such as maternity and lactation.
Today, two women who believe in the importance of role models for girls, and with similar missions, met. Thank you ASPA and Captain Martha Vera for a great welcome (with an amazing tiered cake, topped with a shark airplane, a girl and an outline of the map of the world!). What else could one desire!!!
